What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy originated in America over 100 years ago and is a treatment choice which today utilises the both medical knowledge and manual techniques to relieve pain, strain, improve joint movement and muscle flexibility. Osteopathy training in Australia requires 6 years of university study and is regulated under the government body of AHPRA.

The aim of an Osteopath is to improve how well your body functions by restoring balanced structure so the body can repair itself.

Although trained in (and still uses) the Direct Technique of manipulation, Colleen’s preferred modality of treatment is through the use of some Indirect Techniques. The various Indirect techniques are especially suited in acute conditions where the pain may be sudden, sharp and debilitating.

Indirect Techniques include:

  1. Functional technique
  2. Muscle Energy Technique (Isometric muscle resistance)
  3. Cranial Osteopathy
  4. Counter-strain

With several years practising in Glebe at the Women’s Health Centre and over 15 years alongside well known Eastern Suburbs Osteopaths Dr Robert Goodsell (Osteopath) and Dr Roman Maslak (Osteopath) Colleen Kent has a depth and breadth of experience. This experience also extends to a wide range of trusted practitioners that she will recommend if the patient requires, including GP’s , Naturopaths , Homeopaths , Acupuncturists , Dentists , Podiatrists, Pilates , Yoga, Personal Trainers, and Massage Therapists .( See links under “Contact”)
